Indole-3-carinole (I-3-C) is a phytonutrient found in brassica vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage and is one of the key health promoting compounds in these foods.
To understand benefits we must first consider estrogen. 'Estrogen' is actually not one substance but a family of forms: E1, E2 and E3 that stimulate the growth and development of women's reproductive systems. These forms undergo metabolism in the liver which can yield different end products or metabolites. The estrogen metabolite 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone (16OHE) is a 'bad' estrogen as it can increase the risk of damaging cells. On the other hand, 'good' estrogens also exist. in the form of 2-hydroxyestrone (2OHE), along with 2-methoxyestradiol. The idea is to encourage the body to favour detoxification into these less harmful pathways and then to ensure proper packaging and excretion of the 'old' hormones.
AOR's I-3-C provides a safe and effective dose of this natural ingredient.
I3C vs DIM: I3C needs stomach acid to then convert into 15+ compounds of which the most prominent is DIM. While there are advantages for supplementing with DIM directly (in individuals with poor stomach acid conversion), some may want to take this parent molecule for the synergy of the other compounds produced.
